Connect your AI assistant
Connect Gridlines to the AI assistant you already use. The assistant can review your programs, help write training, and pull the context you need about your athletes.
The connection uses MCP. You do not need to understand MCP to use it. Add the address below to a compatible AI assistant, then sign in to your account.
Before you connect
You need:
- A Gridlines account.
- An organization that you created or joined.
- An AI assistant that supports remote MCP connections.
The connection is available to every account. Your existing workspace role still controls which programs, athletes, and library items the assistant can access.
Connect your assistant
- Open your assistant's connector settings
Follow the setup guide for your assistant:
For another MCP-compatible assistant, add a remote MCP server or custom connector. Return here when the guide asks for the server URL.
- Add Gridlines
Name the connection Gridlines. Paste this address as the remote MCP server URL:
https://api.getgridlines.com/functions/v1/mcp - Sign in and approve access
Your browser opens the Gridlines sign-in flow. Sign in with your existing account, then approve the connection.
- Check the connection
Start a new conversation. Ask:
Show me the programs I can access. Do not make any changes.
The assistant should return your program library. The connection is ready when you see programs from your workspace.
Use it for programming
Start with the result and the constraints. Include the program, schedule, equipment, athlete level, and the event or quality you are training.
Try one of these prompts:
Read my four-day off-season program. Summarize the weekly structure and flag any days with competing high-intensity work. Do not change the program.
In the four-day off-season program, add a back-off set to each main lift in Week 3. Show me the planned changes before you make them.
Draft a six-week acceleration block with two sprint sessions each week. Use exercises from my library. Show me the structure before you create it.
The assistant can create programs, weeks, days, sessions, exercises, groups, and training blocks. It can also edit schemes, apply protocols, reorganize sessions, and create library exercises and protocols.
Use it to monitor athletes
The connection can read the athletes you coach. It can pull scheduled and completed sessions, training volume, session RPE, top sets, athlete workout notes, and coach notes.
For example:
Review Jordan's last four weeks. Summarize scheduled versus completed sessions, average RPE, top sets, and workout notes. Do not change anything.
Compare Jordan's recent training with the prescribed program. Identify the sessions where performance or RPE moved away from the plan. Suggest what I should review before the next training week.
You can also ask the assistant to save a coach note about an athlete. Athlete notes are visible to coaches with access to that athlete. They are not visible to the athlete.
Review changes before they land
The assistant can read without changing anything. Write actions run when your AI client calls a Gridlines tool. The approval screen depends on the client you use.
Ask the assistant to show its planned changes before every write. Removals require an additional explicit confirmation from you.
Changes go into the real program, not a separate AI copy. Open the program in the builder to review the result. Program History records the changes and their source.
If the connection does not work
- No sign-in window opens: Check that the server URL matches the address above. Remove the connection, then add it again.
- The assistant cannot create a program: Create or join an organization in Gridlines, then reconnect the assistant.
- A program or athlete is missing: Check your role and access in that workspace. The connector cannot bypass your normal permissions.
- The assistant still shows no Gridlines tools: Start a new conversation or restart the AI client after adding the connection.
